Another sketchy sketch sketch. This time Pharoahe Monch, of Organized Konfusion (formerly).
I've really been trying to nail likeness with these past couple. I draw out a super-quick, sloppy grid so I can get the placement of the eyes, top of head, bottom of chin and nose right. If those things don't match up, it tends to throw the whole thing out of whack in my opinion.
Well done. very distinctive look. I had a question also regarding the Jay Dee image you reworked. That background blocking is very nice for a illustrative look, and wondered if you could share some info on how to get it done. Would you be so kind and point me in the right direction ? ^^
I sort of cut up the reference image I was using and pulled the contrast up, used threshold, selected just the black area and made a path from it and exported that path to illustrator. Once you open that in Illustrator, you can specify color to it. Then I just drew in different fields of color behind that main shape. I don't know if that makes any sense at all!
I too have tried to work on likeness. You are 100% correct if its off a little its off a lot. You did a great job. You could post these with no titles and I would know who they are off.
very sick piece, I like the fact that it resembles Pharoahe Monch in every way possible, knew who it was in the very beginning, and I completely like the new style that you decided to try out, really suits the hip-hop genre. This is completely awesome.
Thanks man. I'm definitely digging this technique too... It's bringing back to my roots on a few levels. I used to draw all the great emcees back in high school just rocking straight pencil, so it's nostalgic for me.
I am impressed. This was unique.
