Or does deviantart just seem sort of non-community like nowadays? Not the site itself, but just how people generally interact with each other on here... I could be wrong- I haven't nearly been on as much as I used to; mostly because I don't have much time to myself anymore where I can rock my own personal art.

It's been ages since I've been consistently involved (life gets in the way), and I don't have a good handle on what the state of play is around here anymore, but it does seem like a lot of the old crew has moved on...

Been feeling lately like I want to fight to find time to get back into producing stuff and sharing it...

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of good DevArt apps for smart devices; I reckon a messenger app for forums/notes in DA that hit you with a notification for new communications might keep people a bit more involved?

Yeah, I mean it looks like they're 'trying' to follow more of a social media vibe with the new layout, but like you said, there's not much for this site in the ways of mobile, so it's severely behind.

I've found some of the original gangsters either on instagram or even facebook, but yeah, it definitely feels like the majority of the people I were interested in have jumped ship. Ah, well...

That's a shame, I haven't really used the site for about a year and have only just started trying to get back into it so I can't complain too much, but when I joined I would get little tips and learn things from new people with most of the illustrations I uploaded. But it eventually did seem to evolve into only my fan art would get a look in and not so many people caring about the work if it wasn't from a recognizable franchise. There are also a lot more art sites out there now and more options, so the people finding better feedback from elsewhere are probably sticking with those sites now.

Yeah I feel you on that. But I more agree with KreepingSpawn, DA is what I make it and I am ONLY concerned with peeps I watch and or Watch me yo

I think DA is what we make of it.  I avoid the front page, and deal mostly with those I watch, or who watch me.
And I've had a largely positive experience for the last 9 years.

Yeah... I think just a lot of the people I really interacted a lot with have either bounced or just straight disappeared, which sucks. I still catch some of their work in other places, though.

Yeah, the hardest part is the folks who have vanished over the years.  :(
Sometimes they turn up again!  ;)

dA is more or less an artistic facebook. Hot girls, and what's popular are all anyone wants. Sadly. No one is getting tips on details and small shit, just giant unesseccary critiques or NOTHING at all. Plus, cats seem to be collabong less. I think most of it is generation based. Older cats are doing bigger and better things or family shit. And new heads have no direction. IMO.

I agree with all.  It's hard to be socially active if you're an artist doing this as a hobby when you have a regular 9-5, as well as the professional that have deadlines and such.  It was fun in high school when us 'weird' art class students would get together and have drawing sessions, and I'd get inspired by my peers and seeing how they have their own technique and style.  But, it seems that the crowd here is much younger than I, and they just follow what's popular.

its true people are nastier here now. I think it has to do with my generation being really rude, I apologize on behalf of them.

i think a lot of the "creativity" is gone and people are looking for page views and faves.

i've been following you for years and respect what you bring to DA and the art community as a whole. (especially when you and Kid Notorious collabed on a few pieces. fuggin awesome!) so if you got some ideas or whatnot you need to bounce off somebody, i gotcha homie! (one idea... MOAR JOEY THE BITER BUTCHER!)

what i've noticed is that a lot of artists have gained some level of notoriety and have been fortunate enough to find work doin this art thang. they'll use DA as a gallery of sorts but people aren't communicating and collabing like they were when i joined about 6 years ago. people seem to have either moved on or life has gotten in the way of their hobby becoming a career. i still try and be social and community oriented but it's like performing to an empty arena.... unless you're drawing ass-naked women. then you get all the attention DA has to offer!!!

Hahahaha, I noticed that. If you play to certain niches then people are all over stuff... It doesn't necessarily have to be 'good art' per se, but if it's fan art of some shitty manga or, like you said, ass-nekked chicks, or my personal pet peeve, the dizzy broads that take shitty selfies and submit them as stock art, then you get all sorts of comments and shit like that.

I'm not looking for attention, but I do look for bouncing thoughts, ideas, tips and all that shit off my fellow artists. And I just don't see that anymore.

I do see a lot of ugly fetish fanart at the top of pages when I do searches on them and I question how could these possibly have gotten these many views when you have these more skillful and creative pieces on here. I don't think I ever really found it that social. It might be because I don't delve into the forum outside of the thumbshare and job services threads.

It definitely used to be much more social... I mean, I've been here forever, so I probably just sound like an old man yelling at the kids from his porch, but there seemed to be a lot more artist interaction and almost every conversation that happened in the comments was focused on art in some way. Now I come on here, and the only sort of comments or notes I get is people telling me, not ASKING me, to do work for them? Really, dude? "Yo, I need you to do a drawing of me." Hahaha, nah, man. I'm good.

Nah... I'm doing okay on the money side. I'd much rather put more time into my own art. I've been trying to develop stories and graphic novel type stuff for years now, but because i had to hustle and do shit side jobs like that for so long, I haven't had the time to. Now that my family's a little older, I'm doing well professionally-speaking, I don't NEED to be taking crap like this. Not to mention the actual hustle of actually getting paid by these people is exhausting. Trust me, much more of a headache than it's worth the majority of the time. I have some steady freelance work from reliable people, as well as my normal 9-5, which is design work, so it's all good.
